Welcome to the Philippine Consulate General in Shanghai.  The Consulate General was established on 10 July 2002.  It is the fifth Philippine Foreign Service Post in China after the Philippine Embassy in Beijing and the Consulates in Hong Kong, Xiamen and Guangzhou. The Consulate General has jurisdiction over the Municipality of Shanghai and the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui and Hubei.

 

PROFILE: CONSUL GENERAL

 

Consul General Maria Rowena Mendoza Sanchez is a career diplomat who joined the Philippine Foreign Service in 1978 and passed the Foreign Service Officers Examination in 1979.  She took courses in Social Work and Development Management and has undergone training courses at the Foreign Service Institute on political and economic analyses, economic diplomacy, environmental concerns, cultural diplomacy, career management and organizational development.

 

She was Chief Coordinator of the Department of Foreign Affairs under President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo when she served concurrently as Secretary of Foreign Affairs, the late Secretary Blas F. Ople and his successor, Secretary Delia Domingo Albert.  In the Home Office, she has held various executive position such as Acting Assistant Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Office of Personnel and Administrative Services and the Office of United Nations and Other International Organizations, Member, Board of Foreign Service Examinations, Executive Director of the Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers’ Affairs, Secretary-General of the Philippine Claims and Compensation Commission Secretariat, Officer-in-Charge of the Office of the Undersecretary for Special Concerns and Acting Chairman, Overseas Absentee Voting Secretariat. 

 

Prior to her assignment to Shanghai, she served overseas as Consul General in San Francisco, California, U.S.A. from 2004-2007, Deputy Chief of Mission and Consul General at the Philippine Embassy in London from 1997-2000 with concurrent accreditation to Dublin, Ireland and Reykjavik, Iceland.  She was also Acting Philippine Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization, London in 1998.  She was posted as Consul at the Philippine Consulate General in Chicago from 1994 to 1997 and was assigned to the Philippine Embassies in Washington D.C. from 1982 to 1987 and Ottawa from 1987 to 1990 in various capacities.

 

Consul General Sanchez is the second Consul General assigned to Shanghai.  She assumed her position on 09 August 2007.
