04 April 2008 - Philippine Consul General to Shanghai Maria Rowena Mendoza Sanchez led a delegation composed of Consul Aileen Mendiola, Tourism Attache Gerry Panga, Tourism Administrative Officer Niel Ballesteros, Chief Interpreter Michelle Tang and Figaro Coffee Area Manager Ros Juan to visit Zhejiang Province recently and was warmly met by Vice Governor Zhong Shan and Hangzhou Vice Mayor Tong Guili.

In her official talks with the officials of Zhejiang province and Hangzhou City, Consul General Sanchez said that the sister province relationship of Zhejiang with Bulacan and the sister-city relation of Hangzhou City with Baguio City are good vehicles to help promote the people-to-people relationship between the Philippines and Zhejiang.

Both sides agreed that there should be increased contacts and cooperation between the Zhejiang and the Philippines and expressed their hope that flights between the Philippines and Hangzhou will become more frequent and eventually become regular.  During the last Chinese New Year, Philippine Airline flew several charter flights from Hangzhou to Boracay.  This was well received by tourists from the province.

During her official visit to Zhejiang, Consul General Sanchez called on officials of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Zhejiang Sub-Council.

Consul General Sanchez was able to secure the full support of the province to promote deeper bilateral cooperation in trade, and tourism.

She also visited the Alibaba headquarters in Hangzhou.  Alibaba is one of the world's premier e-commerce brands and the number one online marketplace for global and domestic China trade.  Alibaba’s marketplace forms a community of more than 24 million users from over 200 countries and regions.   In her meeting with Alibaba’s International Business Development and Marketing Group, Consul General Sanchez said that she sees Alibaba further expanding its market coverage in the Philippines since the services being offered by the company dovetails with the economic development goals of the Philippine Government for its small and medium enterprises.  She enjoined Alibaba to consider the Philippines as a potential investment and meeting destination.
