18 June 2008 - The Philippine Consulate
General in Shanghai held a series of activities to commemorate the 110th
Anniversary of the Declaration of Philippine Independence Day. On 12 June
2008, Consul General to Shanghai Maria Rowena Mendoza Sanchez hosted a
simple Vin d’honneur at the Renaissance Yangtze Hotel Shanghai. It
was attended by 200 guests including ranking officials from the Shanghai
Municipal Government led by Shanghai Vice Mayor Tang Deng Jie, members of
the consular corps and business community, travel and trade media, leaders
of the Filipino community as well as official representatives from the
provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang.
On 15 June 2008, around 1000 Filipinos and
their guests gathered at the Gongqing Park to attend the 1st Philippine
National Day Picnic with the theme “Kasalo, Kasali, Kasayahan sa
Pagdiriwang ng Ating Kalayaan.” The picnic was organized by the Shanghai
Philippine Independence Day Committee (SPIDCom) which is composed of leaders
of the Philippine community, representatives of Philippine companies in
Shanghai and the Philippine Consulate General in Shanghai. The Philippine
Musicians Association of Shanghai (PMAS) provided the entertainment during
the picnic. The picnic was made possible through the products and services
and raffle prizes offered by Philippine owned companies in Shanghai such as
Dai-ichi Electronics Shanghai Co. Ltd., Liwayway (China) Co. Ltd.,
Philippine Airlines, Eton Properties, Metrobank Shanghai, Cebu Pacific,
Robinsons Land, URC, Figaro Coffee Company, ASPAC Land, First Metro, Vista
Land, Bench, Dole Philippines, Cocoon & Ciococo, and Bancnet. Pag-Ibig Fund
and One Ayala also provided valuable support to the event.
During the picnic, the Philippine
Consulate General conducted its Serbisyo Para sa Republika mobile
consular mission and offered consular services such as passport renewals,
notarials, community and Pig-ibig Fund registration, and assistance to
nationals to the community.
The Consulate General also spearheaded a
charity drive for the victims of the Sichuan Earthquake as the Filipino
community’s way of showing its solidarity with the people and government of
China. END.
