12 June 2009: The Philippine Consulate General in Shanghai commemorated the 111th Anniversary of the Declaration of Philippine Independence Day with a simple Vin D’honneur at the Renaissance Yangtze Hotel Shanghai.

The event was attended by over 200 guests including ranking officials from the Shanghai Municipal Government led by Shanghai Vice Mayor Zhao Wen, members of the consular corps and business community, travel and trade media, leaders of the Filipino community as well as official representatives from the provinces of Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei and Zhejiang.

In her speech, Consul General Maria Rowena Mendoza Sanchez noted that not only is the Philippines celebrating its 111th Independence Day but also the 34th year of the establishment of Philippines-Diplomatic Relations.  She also extended President Arroyo’s message that “Filipinos are of one heart with our Chinese friends in keeping our partnership strong, mature, and forward-looking.”

The reception is just one of the activities organized by the Philippine Consulate General to celebrate the 111th Independence Day.  On 7 June, over 1,000 Filipinos in Shanghai gathered together for a picnic which was held at the Gardens of The Eton Hotel.

From 12 to 21 June, the Philippine Consulate General teamed up with The Eton Hotel Shanghai to hold the Philippine Food Festival. Chefs from the Philippines flew in to Shanghai just for this event. END
